Imagine an infection that actually feeds on the only antibiotic available to counter it and you have some measure of the problem in dealing with conspiracy theories. When conspiracists encounter solid evidence against their favoured scenario, they have only two options available to them. They can compromise their religious belief in the narrative they've constructed, or they can simply enlarge it, extending the conspiracy so that, amoeba-like, it absorbs this irritating foreign body and digests it whole.

Yeah, a dire article -- the Independent might be the best of the totally appalling corporate newspapers in the UK but it's still really dire most of the time, Media Lens is a good at pulling the UK "liberal" media up on it's pro-Imperial coverage:

I've not read their books but it's very highly recommended:

One more piece of crap to add to the pile:

So, you believe in conspiracy theories, do you? You probably also think you're the Emperor of Pluto

I mention this because recently I've found myself bumping into people - intelligent, level-headed people - who are sincerely prepared to entertain the notion that there might be something in some of the less lurid 9/11 conspiracy theories doing the rounds. They mumble about the "controlled demolition" of WTC 7 (oft referred to as "the third tower"), or posit the notion that the Bush administration knew 9/11 was coming and let it happen anyway. I mean, you never know, right? Right? And did I tell you I'm the Emperor of Pluto?

Oh, wow, that is bad, but I have heard this from many left activists in the UK:

a conspiracy this huge would be impossible to pull off

Yet 19 (or was it 20 or 21...?) amateurs managed it... uh-hu...

Technically speaking, standard intercept protocol should have made the 9/11 attacks impossible, but the war game scenarios were "conveniently" taking place.
