Statement from Attorneys Representing Dr. Bruce Ivins During Anthrax Investigation

Last update: 12:57 p.m. EDT Aug. 1, 2008 ROCKVILLE, Md., Aug 01, 2008 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- The following is a statement issued by Venable LLP attorneys Paul F. Kemp and Thomas M. DeGonia in response to questions surrounding the sudden death of Dr. Bruce Ivins. "For more than a year, we have been privileged to represent Dr. Bruce Ivins during the investigation of the anthrax deaths of September and October of 2001. For six years, Dr. Ivins fully cooperated with that investigation, assisting the government in every way that was asked of him. He was a world-renowned and highly decorated scientist who served his country for over 33 years with the Department of the Army. We are saddened by his death, and disappointed that we will not have the opportunity to defend his good name and reputation in a court of law. We assert his innocence in these killings, and would have established that at trial. The relentless pressure of accusation and innuendo takes its toll in different ways on different people, as has already been seen in this investigation. In Dr. Ivins' case, it led to his untimely death. We ask that the media respect the privacy of his family, and allow them to grieve." Paul F. Kemp Thomas M. DeGonia Venable LLP

This story runs pretty deep. Is it getting any play in the corporate media?

    http://rawstory.com/news/2008/Report_Therapist_fea...

The therapist for Bruce E. Ivins told a judge that as far back as 2000, the late microbiologist suspected in the 2001 anthrax attacks had attempted to poison people and that she was "scared to death" of him, according to an audiotape of the session that emerged Saturday.

Social worker Jean Duley testified at a hearing in Frederick on July 24 in a successful bid for a protective order from Ivins. The New York Times obtained a recording of the hearing and posted it on its Web site Saturday.

"As far back as the year 2000, the respondent has actually attempted to murder several other people, either through poisoning. He is a revenge killer. When he feels that he's been slighted or has had - especially toward women - he plots and actually tries to carry out revenge killings," Duley said.

She added that Ivins "has been forensically diagnosed by several top psychiatrists as a sociopathic, homicidal killer. I have that in evidence. And through my working with him, I also believe that to be very true."

Duley told the judge she was "scared to death" of Ivins.

    Wall Street Journal oped:

however, if ivins were so obsessed with homicidal ideation, why was he employed nonstop for the past 18 years? come on..no fly

I believe he's a fall guy for the real story...which was most likely not fanatic arab terrorists either. those letters were directed on purpose to help jettison the patriot act and the "war on terror" and the "evil muslim myth". wonder if we'll ever know the truth?

Jean C. Duley... tell us again...

Okay, well the more research I do into the now infamous Ms. Jean C. Duley - the "therapist" who filed a restraining order against the alleged anthrax attacks suspect Bruce E. Ivins - the more her story sounds like a whole load of crap.

The Administration is under such intense scrutiny right now. It seem logical, and is also evident in so many other ways, that they are doing everything they can to cover the heavy stuff so that the public and members of our government can fume about what's already on the table for a few more months before other concerns draw our attention away.

If Nick weren't so busy, he might have something to say about this. He has a more clear picture of the anthrax attacks than most, having done more research than just about anyone. And from what I understand, having spoken with him about this, the government has plenty to cover and a strong motive to do so.

This guy goes right to the top of the list of the most suspect suicides we've seen in recent years. And in this case, someone seems to have been in a hurry, as the cover story is really shoddy.

    Here's he latest:

Feds say Ivins alone caused 2001 anthrax attacks

Army scientist Bruce Ivins "was the only person responsible" for anthrax attacks in 2001 that killed five and rattled the nation, the Justice Department said Wednesday, buttressing its claim with the release of dozens of documents all pointing to his guilt.

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080806/ap_on_go_ca_st...

What I see is evidence that Ivins may have been involved and not that he was solely responsible. We will likely never know if he was taking orders.

The supposition offered about motive is not very convincing to me.

As for motive, investigators seemed to offer two possible reasons for the attacks: that the brilliant scientist wanted to bolster support for a vaccine he helped create and that the anti-abortion Catholic targeted two pro-choice Catholic lawmakers.

Sorry, but this whole Kappa Kappa Gamma thing is ridiculous. Like just because he had harassed some mindless sorority it means he's a mass murderer. The guy was probably just a nerd who had a grudge against some bimbo sorority...

    http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/07/washington/07ant...

Moreover, months of work uncovered no evidence that Dr. Ivins had traveled to Princeton, N.J., where investigators believe the letters were mailed. The closest connection was that a chapter house of Kappa Kappa Gamma, a sorority with which Dr. Ivins had a long and strange obsession, is located near the contaminated Princeton mailbox.

In fact, many of the documents enumerate bizarre acts and e-mail messages, many related to the sorority, with no direct relation to the anthrax case. For example Dr. Ivins engaged in an editing war on the Wikipedia entry for the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, trying, often unsuccessfully, “to post derogatory information.”

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kappa_Kappa_Gamma

In 1997 the television show 20/20 featured an expose on hazing in the sorority system[2] that included a hazing by three members of Kappa Kappa Gamma at DePauw University, as well as an incident of hazing at Delta Sigma Theta and a local sorority Lambda Delta Sigma at Concordia College. The three members of Kappa Kappa Gamma, on November 6, 1997, were accused of branding 3 pledges[3] with cigarettes in a family ritual after a night of heavy drinking. After being burned the pledges were encouraged to streak across campus and to grovel for cigarettes at a fraternity house.[4] The result was severe enough to send one of the pledges to the hospital with minor burn injuries.[5]
