Officials said he was cooperating with interrogators, who used a little-known law to delay reading him his Miranda rights, which permit a suspect to remain silent and not incriminate himself.

The bomb was comprised of a bizarre concoction of fireworks, clocks, gasoline, propane gas, and fertilizer. It failed to go off, only fizzling, and the fertilizer, say police, was not even the right kind to explode.

However, had the bomb managed to ignite, it still would have created a "fireball" and caused "mayhem," officials say.

Why Did CBS Scrub A Story About Army Spy Planes Capturing the Times Square Bomber? (Updated)

    http://gawker.com/5532101/why-did-cbs-scrub-a-stor...

According to WCBS, they simply got caught up in the frenzy of breaking news and "inadvertently" put in an unconfirmed detail. There is a problem with this account: The detail about the Army intelligence planes was featured prominently in the title of the originally article. Clearly, the line wasn't "inadvertently included"—it was put in and deliberately promoted. After all, it was the most eye-catching detail of the story.

Shahzad: On Feds' Radar in 2004? http://motherjones.com/mojo/2010/05/faisal-shahzad...

    Quoting the NYT:

George LaMonica, a 35-year-old computer consultant, said he bought his two-bedroom condominium in Norwalk, Conn., from Mr. Shahzad for $261,000 in May 2004. A few weeks after he moved in, Mr. LaMonica said, investigators from the national Joint Terrorism Task Force interviewed him, asking for details of the transaction and for information about Mr. Shahzad. It struck Mr. LaMonica as unusual, but he said detectives told him they were simply "checking everything out."

First they came for the Muslims, but I was not a Muslim, so I did not speak out. Then they came for the American Citizens, but I am an American Citizen, so I went shopping and watched TV, and they didn't bother me.

Holder: Miranda may need changes for terrorists By STEVEN R. HURST (AP) – 8 hours ago WASHINGTON — In the wake of the Times Square bombing plot, the Obama administration said on Sunday it wants to work with Congress on possible limitations of the constitutional rights afforded terrorism suspects — even for American citizens. Attorney General Eric Holder said changes may be needed to allow law enforcement more time to question suspected terrorists before they are told about their Miranda rights to a lawyer and to remain silent under interrogation. As the nation debates how to proceed against terrorist attacks, particularly as they have become the work of individuals who are difficult to detect in advance, the administration has been heavily criticized for reading Miranda rights to suspects in the Christmas Day attempt to blow up a plane heading for Detroit and the May 1 Times Square plot. Terrorism has presented all sides in the debate with a delicate balancing act, protecting the rights of the individuals accused of terrorism while also attending to public safety. http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5...
