The crash that killed journalist Michael Hastings was ruled an accident by police, but conspiracy theories continued to circulate on Friday.

Hastings, 33, was killed in a fiery solo-vehicle crash in Hancock Park early Tuesday morning.

He was best known for a 2010 Rolling Stone article that led to the resignation of Gen. Stanley McChrystal, who was the former U.S. and NATO commander in Afghanistan.

Staff Sgt. Joseph Biggs told KTLA that he received an email from Hastings on Monday.

Biggs had known Hastings since 2008, when the journalist was embedded in his unit in Afghanistan.

“On Monday morning, I woke up and I got an email, and it’s very panicked,” Biggs said.

He was blind-copied on the email, which was sent to Hastings’ colleagues.

In part, it said that the feds were interviewing his close friends and associates, and that he was onto a big story and needed to get off the radar.

The FBI has denied that Hastings was ever under investigation.

“It alarmed me very much,” Biggs said. “I just said it doesn’t seem like him. I don’t know, I just had this gut feeling and it just really bothered me,” he said.

A person who witnessed the crash early Tuesday morning said he saw Hastings speeding down the road in his car when it suddenly jackknifed, slammed into a tree, and burst into flames. http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2013/06/18/journalist-m...

However, the Los Angeles Police Department told the Los Angeles Times on Thursday that there did not appear to be any signs of foul play in the accident. The Times said that officials were trying to figure out whether there had been a mechanical failure in the car. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/06/20/michael-h...

Anyone want to guess how often cars suddenly just flip do to mechanical failure?

As IBT notes, Hastings wrote in his book, "The Operators: The Wild and Terrifying Inside Story of America's War in Afghanistan," that he received a death threat from a former McChrystal staff member.

"We'll hunt you down and kill you if we don't like what you write," the staffer threatened, according to Hastings, who calmly responded: "Well, I get death threats like that about once a year, so no worries."

Hastings went on to say: "I wasn't disturbed by the claim. Whenever I'd been reporting around groups of dudes whose job it was to kill people, one of them would usually mention that they were going to kill me."

It's a little hard to remain "objective" about this when it seems so fishy...

This looks like a pretty irresponsible and sensationalistic analysis. I've been seeing this guy linked or quoted all over the place. First one on the conspiracy scene gets a lot of play. Don't forget no plane at the Pentagon...

He chose one still from the video where you can't see the palm tree and claims,

There is no impact damage to this car. The only damage there is in the back, not smashed in the front and it obviously missed the tree as it rolled to a stop. The front bumper is obscured by the tree, all the way to the tire, OOPS! .

As with Boston, I see a sort of desperation to provide sensationalistic new details and "evidence" as fast as possible in order to compete for attention and hits.

    Infowars quotes Jim stone
    http://www.infowars.com/evidence-indicates-michael...

“No matter how you slice this particular pie, a Mercedes is not just going to explode into flames without a little assistance,” writes freelance journalist Jim Stone. “Car fires in new cars happen for three main reasons — running the engine out of oil, or running the engine out of coolant, or after an absolutely huge car mangling accident, having the hot side of the battery short out against the frame before it reaches the fuse panel. And for all 3 of those normal reasons, which account for virtually all car fires in modern cars, the fire would have started in the engine compartment, progressed slowly, and scorched the hell out of the paint before ever reaching the gas tank. That clean paint is the be all tell all, Michael Hastings was murdered, and the rest is detail.”

When you read this crap and your all amped up about a breaking conspiracy story, you might tend to be susceptible to absorbing these totally unsourced claims that sound definitive.

    Jim Stone actually claims,

Jim Stone doesn't know what he's talking about. Running an engine out of oil won't cause a car fire--it will just make the engine seize. Running an engine out of coolant won't start a fire--it will just make the engine quit running and maybe seize.

Joseph Cannon cited a very scary address that suggests that remote control of some of the 30 or so mini-computers resident in modern cars could provide control capable of creating a crash. This is Kathleen Fisher, an official at DARPA: http://youtu.be/3D6jxBDy8k8

Was Michael Hastings' Car Hacked? Richard Clarke Says It's Possible
    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/06/24/michael-h...

The peculiar circumstances of journalist Michael Hastings' death in Los Angeles last week have unleashed a wave of conspiracy theories.

Now there's another theory to contribute to the paranoia: According to a prominent security analyst, technology exists that could've allowed someone to hack his car. Former U.S. National Coordinator for Security, Infrastructure Protection, and Counter-terrorism Richard Clarke told The Huffington Post that what is known about the single-vehicle crash is "consistent with a car cyber attack."

    ...

"I'm not a conspiracy guy. In fact, I've spent most of my life knocking down conspiracy theories," said Clarke, who ran afoul of the second Bush administration when he criticized the decision to invade Iraq after 9/11. "But my rule has always been you don't knock down a conspiracy theory until you can prove it [wrong]. And in the case of Michael Hastings, what evidence is available publicly is consistent with a car cyber attack. And the problem with that is you can't prove it."

I trust drone-loving Richard "your government failed you" now buy my book limited hangout Clarke about as much as I can throw Alex Jones. Hint: not far.

But I will say this, that fire looks way too hot to be any kind of car fire. And, I drive past the spot of the accident on a regular basis and I have know idea how that car had enough room to go that fast.

Journalist Michael Hastings' Body Cremated by Authorities Against Family's Wishes (Video)

    http://www.opposingviews.com/i/society/transportat...

Journalist Michael Hastings’ body was reportedly cremated by Los Angeles authorities against his family’s wishes, destroying possible evidence of his mysterious death in a car accident on June 18.

Hastings was killed when his Mercedes crashed into a tree at a high speed and exploded.

Only hours earlier, Hastings sent an email to friends at Buzzfeed.com stating that he was “onto a big story” and had “to go off the radar for a bit.” He also warned his colleagues that they might be questioned about him by authorities.

“A close family friend did confirm that Michael’s body was sent home in an urn, meaning he was cremated and it wasn’t the request of the family... in fact the family wanted Michael’s body to go home," stated San Diego 6 reporter Kimberly Dvorak on Sunday (video below).

[Hastings] came to believe his Mercedes was being tampered with. "Nothing I could say could console him," Thigpen says.

One night in June, he came to Thigpen's apartment after midnight and urgently asked to borrow her Volvo. He said he was afraid to drive his own car. She declined, telling him her car was having mechanical problems.

"He was scared, and he wanted to leave town," she says.

The next day, around 11:15 a.m., she got a call from her landlord, who told her Hastings had died early that morning. His car had crashed into a palm tree at 75 mph and exploded in a ball of fire.
