Big protest/encampment tonight and tomorrow in Berkeley (8 posts)

I hear they're bussing in a lot of right wing protest warrior types. It's going to be interesting. Berkeley gave Code Pink a parking spot in front of the Marine Recruiting Office and there has been a big uproar and calls from conservatives to cut state/federal funds from the city.

Battle royal brewing at Berkeley council meeting

If you want to get a seat at Tuesday night's Berkeley City Council meeting, you better start lining up now. And you might want to bring earplugs. And a flak jacket.

Hundreds of protesters from across the country and the political spectrum are expected to descend on City Hall with bullhorns, drums, banners and plenty of vitriol in anticipation of the City Council's debate over the Marines' recruiting station in town.

    Numbers will be important.

If you see the media showing only close-up photos of people and no long shots of crowds, you'll know it was a good turnout for peace.

    Illegitimate government
    Illegal, immoral war
    1.3 million dead
    Sanctioned torture
    ?????????????????????

And Berkeley is to blame for "not supporting" the troops? Corporate media you are a fucking joke.

This LA Times garbage has a blatant establishment/right wing bias to it, as does almost every story I see about this.

In Washington, one of the bill's sponsors, Rep. Ted Poe (R-Texas), fumed on the House floor recently that the city had a " '60s peacenik, hippie mentality that world peace can occur by sitting around smoking dope and banging on the tambourine."

Corporate populace too. Not really a joke, but certainly an overwhelming phenomenon of violent security, violent happiness, violent supremacy. Peace is hurtful to the unsettled.

The Berkeley protest was pretty intense tonight. The rightwing was over the top with their attack signs. Cops attacked high school kids, which radicalizes them.

Some of my pictures are here: http://picasaweb.google.com/victronix01/BerkeleyPr...

Other non MSM-prowar-biased coverage is here: http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2008/02/12/184785...

The MSM wants to spin it as Berkeley hates the military to try to shut them up. Berkeley merely does not want recruitment going on for an illegal war with lies being told to Berkeley youth to coerce them into joining.

I spoke with one of the resolution authors. He stressed that the importance of this event is that it brings the debate about the WAR back to the front and center.

"Marines can stay in Berkeley, without an apology from City Council" http://origin.mercurynews.com/portal/alamedacounty...

The Berkeley City Council attempted to make nice with U.S. Marines recruiters early today by taking back a letter it planned to send calling the Corps 'uninvited and unwelcome intruders' in the city.

But a motion to formally apologize failed.

Instead the City Council with a 7-2 vote at 1 a.m. sought to clarify one of its Jan. 29 Marines motions with new language that recognizes "the recruiters' right to locate in our city and the right of others to protest or support their presence."

The new statement also said the council opposes "the recruitment of our young people into this war."

The council heard testimony from about 100 people who came from as far away as Colorado to weigh in on the issue.

At the same time, the council let stand four other items it passed at its previous meeting, including one encouraging "all people to avoid cooperation with the Marine Corps recruiting station," another asking the city attorney to investigate whether the recruiting station is breaking the city's law against discrimination based on sexual orientation and two items giving the peace group Code Pink a free weekly parking space and sound permit to protest at the Shattuck Avenue recruiting station once a week.

All this about a message they never sent? And the result was no change in their position, but just a nod to political correctness. Well, at least they stuck to their basic intent. And the conservative response I've seen quoted is embarrassingly off topic. "Berkeley hates 'Merica!"

    Who doesn't support the troops?

Military recruitment and oil revenues are the core of the lifeblood of the warmongers. When you touch these in any way, they explode, because this is their vulnerable side being tapped.

The Bay Area has now touched on both of these. In Oakland, the protest at the docks to expose the fact that Iraqi oil was coming in there turned into an all out violent attack on defenseless people which was condemned around the world for its brutality --

Aside from the street action, the primary scare tactics against the Berkeley City Council were financial (Rethugs cutting Federal funding for various city programs, local merchants complaining to the council about business being lost, individuals threatening not to buy anything in Berkeley anymore, etc) and personal (death threats).

The exaggerated responses show what is important. If this action were to spread . . .
