Senate Judiciary Chairman Patrick Leahy announced Thursday he had subpoenaed White House adviser Karl Rove and his deputy. He accused them of stonewalling a widening probe into the firing of federal prosecutors.
“The Bush-Cheney White House continues to place great strains on our constitutional system of checks and balances,” Leahy said in issuing the subpoenas. “Not since the darkest days of the Nixon Administration have we seen efforts to corrupt federal law enforcement for partisan political gain and such efforts to avoid accountability.”

Was Tillman Murdered? AP Gets New Documents
Army medical examiners were suspicious about the close proximity of the three bullet holes in Pat Tillman’s forehead and tried without success to get authorities to investigate whether the former NFL player’s death amounted to a crime, according to documents obtained by The Associated Press.
“The medical evidence did not match up with the, with the scenario as described,” a doctor who examined Tillman’s body after he was killed on the battlefield in Afghanistan in 2004 told investigators.
Source: APThe Bush administration’s environment chief drew fire on Thursday from Democratic senators for delaying a decision on whether to let California regulate global warming emissions from cars and light trucks.
Stephen Johnson, head of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, has said the government will decide this question by year’s end, two years after California’s first request to set state air quality standards stricter than national rules.
Sen. Barbara Boxer, a California Democrat who heads the Environment and Public Works Committee, told Johnson at a hearing she found the delay incomprehensible.

The ACLU in a statement urged the U.S. Congress to “vote to hold White House officials in contempt for refusing to cooperate with legitimate congressional subpoenas.”
The ACLU statement said the issue had become “a constitutional crisis that threatens to destroy the separation of powers.”
