Parkland: JFK conspiracy theories muddy the water, says director

Former journalist Peter Landesman says 'there's very little proof' behind elaborate explanations for President Kennedy's assassination

Conspiracy theories have been unhelpful in the search for truth in the assassination of President Kennedy, it was claimed today by the director of a new film on the subject. Parkland, written and directed by Peter Landesman, has been made to coincide with the 50th anniversary of Kennedy's death in Dallas in 1963, and details events between Friday 22 November, when Kennedy was gunned down, to Monday 25 when both Kennedy and Lee Harvey Oswald were buried.

Landesman told a press conference at the Venice film festival that cinema's preoccupation with Kennedy conspiracy theory had "narrowed" the understanding of the events surrounding the assassination. "For 50 years, the speculation and conspiracy has occupied a lot of emotional and narratorial real estate in films," he said. "That conversation has been had … and there's very little proof … We chose to tell a story we know to be true. We know these things in the film happened; we know they happened to these people."

In the writeup of Dr. Lance deHaven-Smith's presentation at the Toronto conference in 2011 appears an allegation (on p. 91) in Table 4-2 that JFK's limousine was washed down at Parkland Hospital--with the implication that doing so destroyed important forensic evidence.

    Is this true?

From what I understand, the limo was almost immediately sent back to Ford to be repaired and upgraded, destroying some of the most primary evidence in one of the biggest crimes in US history.

12:45 JEH phones RFK to tell him his brother has been assassinated. NBC interrupts regular programming to announce that JFK and Governor Connally have been injured in a shooting. Kinney and Hickey put bubbletop on 100X. Apparently, they request a bucket of water, as one it brought for them and is visible in a Stoughton photo. The benign explanation is that the water was used to clear debris from the cowl of the back seat and, the center partition area and the chrome molding around the windshield, in order for the clamps used with the plexiglass roof to take hold. A more malign explanation is that the trunk area was also washed of debris. One way or another, evidence was destroyed by this act. Putting the roof up, and adding the leatherette cover, takes between 20-30 minutes. Hurschel Jacks -- Texas State Highway Policeman is assigned by the SS to prevent photos being taken of 100X, exterior or interior.

"Who needs facts when you have conspiracy theorists?"

The 50th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy approaches, and debate begins anew. The evidence is overwhelming that Lee Harvey Oswald killed JFK, and nearly as overwhelming that Oswald acted alone. However, history is never completely settled, and the conspiracy theorists are out and about. Many, motivated by profit or fame, are more eager to engage in ad hominem tactics than discuss facts. But some are honest and intelligent, and they deserve a hearing. How to separate them? Ten rules to follow when engaging a conspiracy theorist. Avoid anyone who:

    re: Chicago Tribune propaganda.

An interesting mix of real debunking (the limo driver didn't shoot JFK) and propaganda (don't trust Oliver Stone).

I guess it would be asking too much for the Chicago newspapers to report on the aborted attempt against JFK in Chicago, three weeks before Dallas.
